The Punch grabs the number one spot with 1,23, 287 units sold in H1 FY 2027. Compared to H1 FY 2026, this marks a massive 68 percent YoY growth, the highest in this list. Tata's multi-powertrain strategy, comprising petrol, CNG, and EV versions, helped the Punch get buyers. Its facelift, which arrived in January 2026, came with refreshed looks and feature additions, and it continues to have a solid ride and handling balance that Tatas are known for.

2. Tata Nexon

With 1,11,919 units sold in H1 FY 2026, the Tata Nexon trails just behind its younger brother. It saw a YoY growth of 25 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. 4. Maruti Brezza

Despite selling over 80,000 units, the Brezza saw a YoY decline of 5 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. 5. Hyundai Venue

The Venue sold 68,836 units in H1 FY 2027, marking a  38 percent YoY growth. The Hyundai compact SUV is available with petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines. Only the latter two engines come with automatic gearboxes.

The Sonet continues to be a consistent volume driver for Kia. With 56,929 sold, the Kia compact SUV saw a decent 21 percent YoY growth compared to the previous fiscal year. It shares the same engines as the Hyundai Venue and is due for a generational

7. Mahindra XUV 3XO

The Mahindra XUV 3XO sold 52,851 units in H1 FY 2027. At 19 percent, the XUV 3XO saw the least growth among the models in this list. Mahindra recently rejigged the variant lineup and introduced a CNG version of the SUV in a bid to gain more sales.

With a 30 percent YoY growth, the utilitarian Mahindra Bolero has sold 51,720 units in H1 FY 2027. Exclusively available in a rear-wheel drive layout, the Bolero comes with a single diesel engine that produces 76hp and 210Nm. It's the only compact SUV in this list that offers a flexible 5+2 seating layout.

Hyundai's most affordable SUV, the Exter has sold 46,156 units with a solid YoY growth of 40 percent. The Korean carmaker's answer to the Tata Punch offers petrol and CNG powertrains.

Sub-4-metre SUVs headed for over 15 lakh sales in FY2027

H1 FY2027’s 8,13,657 compact SUVs are already 55 percent of the record FY2026 sales of 14,73,422 units. Given the high double-digit growth of 28 percent in the past six months, the ongoing festive season, as well as the tailwinds for zero-emission compact SUVs, one can expect this popular SUV category to surpass the 15 lakh milestone for the first time in a fiscal year in FY2027.
