Hyundai is in the final stages of testing the high-performance version of the Ioniq 5 EV. Dubbed the Ioniq 5 N, it will make its global debut on July 13, and will be the first high-performance, all-electric Hyundai model. The South Korean carmaker is testing the Ioniq 5 N at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany.

  1. Hyundai Ioniq 5 will have a 10-speaker system to simulate engine sounds
  2. It will also get a simulated gearshifting experience
  3. Hyundai has tested Ioniq 5 N for 10,000km

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N performance upgrades

While Hyundai hasn’t revealed the power figures or the powertrain details, it has revealed the Ioniq 5 N will get larger, 400mm disc brakes, made out of new lightweight material. Hyundai has also tweaked the regenerative braking system of the Ioniq 5 N as it will now have a maximum of 0.6G decelerative force.

Hyundai has also updated the cooling system in the Ioniq 5 N by giving it a larger cooling area. It also gets new N-specific radiator packaging, new motor oil-cooler and a battery chiller. All of these will be managed by new heat management systems called N Battery Preconditioning and N Race. The former will help optimise battery temperature and will get two modes – Drag and Track. The N Race will also have two modes – Sprint and Endurance – that will alter the way power is delivered to limit temperature build-up.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features

The Ioniq 5 N will also come with N Active Sound + that will have a 10-speaker system with eight internal speakers and two external speakers. These speakers are said to imitate the sounds of internal combustion engines, electric vehicles and fighter jets using three sound themes called Ignition, Evolution and Supersonic, respectively.

The performance version of the Ioniq 5 will also get an N e-Shift, which works in conjunction with the N Active Sound + to simulate an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. This function simulates a gearshift by controlling the torque output of the motor and simulates the jerk felt between shifts.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N global unveiling

Hyundai has tested the Ioniq 5 N for 10,000km under rigorous endurance conditions. The firm plans to test the high-performance EV for another 10,000km before it is put into production. The Ioniq 5 N will make its global debut on July 13 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
