350cc Triumph Tracker 400 performance tested and explained
Among all Bajaj-made Triumph 400s, the Tracker and Thruxton are the two motorcycles with the engine in its higher state of tune, which produces 40hp at 8,750rpm and 32Nm of peak torque at 7,500rpm. We were recently able to subject it to our instrumented performance tests, and here’s how it fared.

The Tracker was tested in dry conditions
The engine’s power delivery is linear now compared to the previous 398cc mill, which had a rather strong low- and mid-range. The meat of the power comes in after 6,000rpm and pulls cleanly till the redline. The bike feels tractable enough to cruise at lower speeds in higher gears, making it fun and easy to ride in the city. A comfortable cruise with the engine in its sweet spot in 6th gear comes in around 90-100kph.

The Tracker 400 has a slightly more powerful engine than the other 400s from Triumph, other than the Thruxton. However, after its downsizing, the 349cc engine does need to be revved higher to make progress quicker. The engine can easily do highway speeds without showing any signs of strain, and there was enough power in reserve to make quick overtakes, although a downshift or two would make it a bit faster. While the performance is certainly there, you need to work for it, and the 349cc models have lost a little bit of the effortlessness the 398cc versions used to have.

Brakes have good stopping power and feedback
The Tracker 400 offered good braking performance, and in our tests, it took 16.75 metres to come to a full stop from 60kph. The braking capability improved our confidence while maintaining highway speeds. Like all the other 350cc Triumphs – except the Scrambler – the Tracker comes with sintered brake pads, which give you good power and confidence when coming to a halt in a hurry, repeatedly. The lighter kerb weight of 181kg also favours it in this regard.

The Triumph Tracker 400 is priced at Rs 2.42 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and available in three colour options: Aluminum Silver, Racing Yellow and Phantom Black. Overall, the Tracker 400 is a fun and engaging motorcycle to ride, but one thing to keep in mind is that while this is certainly a street bike, its riding position is more committed than the average roadster. It is likely to appeal to those looking for an off-beat, premium and playful bike for the city with a hint of neo-retro styling and the essential safety nets.
