Hero Xtreme 160R price and variants explained

The Xtreme 160R is Hero’s entrant in the hotly-contested 150-160cc commuter bike segment in India. Over the years it has gone through different iterations and is available in a total of three variants. Here we’ll break down what each variant offers you and how much it costs.

Single Disc

The base variant of the Xtreme 160R lineup was originally the only one on sale and it's the sole one to offer a simpler 2-valve engine. The 163.2cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine makes 15hp and 14Nm of torque, which is a little lower than the other variants. It also makes do with a conventional right way up telescopic fork and a drum brake, simpler components than those on the higher variants. At 139.5kg, the Xtreme 160R is one of the lightest machines in its class and weighs 8 kilos less than the higher variants. It is offered in two colours - black and white - and costs Rs 1.05 lakh, which is good value because the top variant of the Xtreme 125R costs nearly the same.

Double Disc

Moving up, the double disc variant offers you a more modern 4-valve head design inside the engine, boosting output to 16.9hp and 14.6Nm of torque. The jump may not seem that big on paper but our real-world experience with both bikes has shown us that the 4V engine is relatively smoother and less stressed at higher speeds. You also get a gold 37mm USD fork by KYB and a 220mm rear disc brake here. There are  3 colours to choose from here - neon yellow/green, brown and black - and this variant is priced at Rs 1.30 lakh.

Cruise Control

The range-topping variant in the Xtreme 160R family is mechanically identical to the one below it but gets different styling and more features. Hero has given this bike the same angular headlight as the bigger Xtreme 250R as well as a colour LCD display and ride-by-wire too. An electronic throttle body brings in segment first features like cruise control and even 3 riding modes - Sports, Road and Rain. In addition to the three colours available on the lower variant, there’s an additional matte grey colour too. This variant is the most expensive in the Xtreme 160R 4V lineup costing Rs 1.34 lakh.

390 Duke or Interceptor 650: Best bike for casual riding under Rs 4 lakh?

Looking for advice on which new bike to purchase. Few things to note - Budget is INR 3-4 Lakhs. It will not be my primary mode of transport as I mostly use my car. The bike will be used 60-70 percent for Sunday morning rides, 10-20 percent touring and 10-20 percent maybe the odd office commute or coffee run. Prefer comfortable upright ergonomics.
