Tesla Model Y gets up to Rs 2 lakh discount in India

To clear unsold MY2025 inventory, Tesla India is offering up to Rs 2 lakh discount on its only EV on sale here – the Model Y – limited to the Standard Range variant in Stealth Grey with an all-black interior, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh ex-showroom. Note that, as is generally the case with such offers, the discount is valid only while stocks last.

This comes just over 6 months after the launch of the Tesla Model Y, which had attracted 600 bookings early on and is sold here as a full import. However, as per a Bloomberg India report citing people familiar with the matter, some prospective buyers who made early bookings have since backed out.

Wide gap between early bookings and sales
The report added that the Elon Musk-led company had imported about 300 Model Ys, but weak demand has left roughly 100 vehicles in search of buyers. In calendar year 2025, Tesla sold 226 Model Ys, according to Vahan data, underlining the gap between early bookings and sales.

It is not just an India-specific issue either. Tesla's sales have been under pressure in other countries, with volumes falling in 2025 for a second year in a row, and BYD overtaking it. Growing competition and the tapering of subsidies in some car markets have eaten into Tesla's share across the US, Europe and China, the publication reported further.
Likely factors behind sluggish sales
Low-key India entry, limited showroom count
Tesla's India entry last year was both delayed and notably low-key, arriving without much fanfare. It even failed to secure any import duty concessions from the government, leaving its vehicles subject to duties of up to 110 percent. Factor in the currently limited showroom presence, and the reasons behind the slow sales start to become clearer.
