Mahindra XEV 9S vs Mahindra XEV 9e: Differences explained

With the XEV 9S, Mahindra became the first mass-market brand to launch a three-row electric SUV. The eSUV is sold alongside the XEV 9e coupe SUV as a three-row counterpart, and both SUVs share the INGLO platform. In this article, we compare the finer differences between the two eSUVs, which cater to different buyers.

Mahindra XEV 9S vs Mahindra XEV 9e: Dimensions and design

The XEV 9e looks flamboyant, while the XEV 9S looks more traditional SUV-like

The main difference between the SUVs is their roofline design. The XEV 9e features a sharply raked roofline for its coupe-SUV proportions, while the XEV 9S’ roof is higher-set like the XU700 to accommodate an extra row of seats. At the rear, the XEV 9e has a boxy look with slim connected LED taillamps, but the XEV 9S looks quite similar to the XUV700, though its LED taillights feature different detailing and are connected by a black strip. Moreover, the wheel sizes on the XEV 9e are slightly larger at 19-inch compared to the XEV 9S’ 18-inch wheels.

The XEV 9S and the XEV 9e take different design approaches. The XEV 9e goes for a radical, aggressive coupe-SUV look, while the XEV 9S takes a conventional look and comes across as an electrified version of the  XUV700. The XEV 9S gets a similar-looking front fascia with a nearly similar DRL signature and headlamp setup. A minor difference is that the Mahindra badge is on the grille of the XEV 9S, unlike the XEV 9e, which gets it on the bonnet.

Both feature the same interiors, but the XEV 9S gets additional features

The XEV 9S packs an identical interior design to the XEV 9e. Both SUVs come with a three-screen setup for the instrument cluster, infotainment and a passenger display. Both also get the same steering wheel, centre console setup and upholstery. However, the bigger differences lie in their rear seat space and feature lists.

The biggest difference here is that the XEV 9e is a strict 5-seater, while the XEV 9S gets the flexibility of 7-seats. Moreover, in terms of second row space, the XEV 9e compromises its headroom for the sloping roofline, which the XEV 9S doesn’t. Also, the XEV 9S gets a panoramic sunroof while the XEV 9e gets a fixed panoramic glass roof. The boot spaces differ as well, with the XEV 9e getting a larger 633-litre boot in comparison to 500-litres on the XEV 9S, with the third row folded.

The XEV 9S comes with an extra row of seats

Both the XEV 9e and the XEV 9S are packed to the brim with features, but the XEV 9S goes one up with additional features like a powered boss mode (9e gets manual control only) and ventilated second row seats. Also, the Mahindra XEV 9S features sliding and reclining second row seats, while the XEV 9e’s second row can only recline. Additionally, the 9S can also be had with rear entertainment screens for the second row
