Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter real-world mileage compared

Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter front right angle tracking shot on road

The Honda Activa and the TVS Jupiter have been arch rivals for well over a decade at this point. While the Activa got its last major update over 5 years ago now, the Jupiter 110 was overhauled completely last year. In this story, we’ll examine the efficiency of the two bestselling scooters in India and see how they stack up against each other.

Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter specifications and price

Both are quite evenly matched in terms of specs but Jupiter is more affordable

Specifications and price
Honda Activa TVS Jupiter
Engine 109.5cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled 113.3cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled
Power 8hp at 8,000rpm 8hp at 6,500rpm
Torque 9.05Nm at 5,500rpm 9.80Nm at 5,000rpm
Kerb weight 105kg 105kg
Power-to-weight ratio 76.19hp per tonne 76.19hp per tonne
Fuel tank capacity 5.3 litres 5.1 litres
Price (ex-showroom, Delhi) Rs 74,619 - Rs 87,944 Rs 72,400 - Rs 85,400

As we can observe from the table above, both scooters are quite evenly matched in their specifications. The Jupiter has a slight advantage compared to the Activa in terms of its torque output because its ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) gives you a momentary electric boost a few times a minute. And while both have very similar peak outputs, the TVS’ engine delivers its max output a little earlier in the rev band than the Honda’s motor.

Another factor in the Jupiter’s favour is that it has a small advantage when it comes to pricing in comparison to the Activa and of the two, only the TVS gets a front disc brake on its higher variants. While that has no bearing on the fuel efficiency it's still an important aspect when you consider the entire package.

Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter real world mileage compared

Activa has the higher mileage and better tank range

Real-world mileage
Honda Activa TVS Jupiter
Tested city mileage 54.4kpl 50.2kpl
Tested highway mileage 66.2kpl 56.4kpl
Tested overall mileage 60.3kpl 53.3kpl
Tested range 319.6km 271.8km

In our city fuel economy tests, the Activa has a small 4.2kpl advantage over the Jupiter but that gap widens when we move onto the highway. Out on the open road, the Jupiter’s deficit to the Activa is close to 10kpl, which not only hurts its overall mileage figure but also reduces its tank range quite a bit. Since both scooters weigh the exact same and have near identical fuel tank capacities, it is clear that the Activa’s engine is the more frugal of the two.

Autocar India’s fuel-efficiency testing

Our fuel-efficiency testing routine starts by first brimming the tank and ensuring the scooter is running the manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures. The scooter is then ridden on fixed city and highway routes, where we maintain  average speeds that best mimic real-world scenarios as well as keeping speed limits in mind. The payload on the scooters is kept constant by balancing rider weights and ballast, ensuring consistency across different vehicles and riders. At the end of the test cycle, the fuel tank is once again filled to the brim, giving us an accurate figure of how much fuel has been consumed against the trip meter reading.
