Fastest charging electric midsize SUVs in India

fastest charging electric midsize suv

In recent years, the popularity of the electric midsize SUV segment has grown and several contenders have entered the fray. This isn’t all that surprising because, like ICE-powered midsize SUVs, they strike a great balance between proportions, daily usability, power, features, and importantly, price.

As is the case with EVs, though, range anxiety remains a concern among buyers, which carmakers are attempting to partly alleviate via faster charging speeds. To that end, we’ve ranked every electric midsize SUV on sale in India in descending order of claimed charging time. AC fast charging times have been used as the basis of the rankings.

Note: The Vinfast VF6 hasn't been included in this list as the company has yet to reveal AC charging times for the electric SUV; it only claims a DC fast charging time of 25min for a 10-70 percent charge.

5. Mahindra BE 6

0-100 percent in 8.7 hours (7.2kW)

Price: Rs 18.90-26.90 lakh (without charger)

Arguably the wildest-looking Mahindra you can buy right now, the BE 6 comes equipped with 59kWh and 79kWh battery options. Of these, the 59kWh unit can go from flat to full in 8.7 hours (claimed) using a 7.2kW AC charger (costs Rs 50,000 extra), placing the BE 6 as the slowest-charging SUV on this list.

Mahindra BE 6 charging specs
Battery pack 59kWh 79kWh
7.2kW AC charging time (0-100 percent) 8.7 hours 11.7 hours
11.2kW AC charging time (0-100 percent) 6 hours 8 hours
DC charging time (20-80 percent) 20 mins (140kW) 20 mins (180kW)
Claimed range (km) 557 683
7.2kW charger cost (Rs) 50,000 50,000
11.2kW charger cost (Rs) 75,000 75,000

It’s worth mentioning, though, that the BE 6 offers the largest batteries in its segment, so slower charging times are understandable. Should you need quicker charging from the BE 6, though, you can opt for an 11.2kW AC charger (costs Rs 75,000 extra) that can juice the 59kWh battery from 0-100 percent in just 6 hours.

4. MG ZS EV

0-100 percent in 8.5-9 hours (7.4kW)

Price: Rs 17.99-20.50 lakh (Rs 13-15.51 lakh with BaaS)

Originally launched in 2020 and then facelifted in 2022, the ZS EV is the first electric midsize SUV for the Indian market. It gets a 50.3kWh battery across all variants, which can be charged from 0-100 percent in 8.5-9 hours. Commendably, MG covers the cost of the 7.4kW fast charger and its installation for ZS EV buyers, and the SUV is also available with the BaaS programme to reduce upfront costs.

MG ZS EV charging specs
Battery pack 50.3kWh
7.4kW AC charging time (0-100 percent) 8.5-9 hours
50kW DC charging time (0-80 percent) 60 mins
Claimed range (km) 461
7.4kW charger cost (Rs) Free

Despite the ZS EV’s battery being 8.7kWh smaller than that of the BE 6, there’s only a marginal difference in their charging times – likely a result of the Mahindra’s more efficient born-electric architecture as opposed to the ICE-derived MG EV.

3. MG Windsor EV

10-100 percent in 7 hrs (7.4kW)

Price: Rs 14-18.39 lakh (Rs 9.99-13.99 lakh with BaaS)

The second MG on this list is the popular Windsor EV, which doesn’t fit the midsize SUV mold visually, but is dimensionally in line with the others here. MG offers the Windsor EV with 38kWh and 52.9kWh battery packs, with the former attaining a 10-100 percent charge in a claimed 7 hours. The Windsor can be purchased with BaaS too, and is the most affordable EV here by a fair margin.

MG Windsor EV charging specs
Battery pack 38kWh 52.9kWh
3.3kW AC charging time (10-100 percent) 13.5 hours -
7.4kW AC charging time (10-100 percent) 7 hours 9.5 hours
DC charging time (20-80 percent) 45 mins (45kW) 50 mins (60kW)
Claimed range (km) 332 449
7.4kW charger cost (Rs) Available for free in Essence variant Free of cost

However, it should be noted that the 7.4kW AC charger is not available with the 38kWh Windsor EV’s Excite and Exclusive variants; they support 3.3kW AC charging (13.5 hours for 10-100 percent) only. The Windsor EV Essence, Exclusive Pro, and Essence Pro variants get the 7.4kW charger as standard.

2. Tata Curvv EV

10-100 percent in 6.5 hrs (7.2kW)

Price: Rs 17.49-21.99 lakh (charger included)

When it comes to 7.2kW AC charging speeds, the Tata Curvv EV is the winner here. Entry-level Curvv EV variants get a 45kWh battery that charges from 10-100 percent in 6.5 hours (claimed). Impressively, this is half an hour quicker than that of the Windsor EV, but with a 7kWh larger battery.

Tata Curvv EV charging specs
Battery pack 45kWh 55kWh
7.2kW AC charging time (10-100 percent) 6.5 hours 7.9 hours
DC charging time (10-80 percent) 40 mins (60kW) 40 mins (70kW)
Claimed range (km) 430 502
7.2kW charger cost (Rs) Free Free

The Curvv EV’s larger 55kWh unit even beats the ZS EV's 50.3kWh battery, with the former taking 7.9 hours to charge from 0-100 percent. Tata also offers the 7.2kW charger as standard with the Curvv EV, so buyers of all variants can take advantage of the quicker speeds.

1. Hyundai Creta Electric

10-100 percent in 4 hours (11kW)

Price: Rs 18.02-23.67 lakh (11kW charger costs extra)

Hyundai has only disclosed 11kW AC charging times for the Creta Electric, so it’s not directly comparable to the other SUVs on this list. Still, when compared to the only other electric SUV here that supports 11kW charging – the BE 6 – the Creta Electric’s smaller 42kWh battery charges quicker by two hours, albeit with a slightly higher initial SoC (state of charge) of 10 percent.

Hyundai Creta Electric charging specs
Battery pack 42kWh 51.4kWh
11kW AC charging time (10-100 percent) 4 hours 4.83 hours
50kW DC charging time (10-80 percent) 58 mins 58 mins
Claimed range (km) 420 510
11kW charger cost (Rs) 73,000 (not available in Executive, Executive Tech) 73,000 (not available in Executive (O) LR)

However, the Creta Electric's upper hand in charging speeds is offset by a 157-173km range deficit compared to the BE 6. Like with the BE 6, the Creta Electric’s 11kW charger is an optional extra worth Rs 73,000 – available in all trim levels barring the Executive, Executive Tech, and Executive (O) LR.

All prices are ex-showroom, India.
