Every hybrid car mileage as tested by Autocar India

Hybrid cars offer a great middle ground between the conventional combustion engine and all-electric powertrains – specifically excellent fuel efficiency with none of the range anxiety typically associated with EVs. Currently, only six hybrid cars are available this side of Rs 50 lakh in India, and we’ve put four of them through our fastidious real-world mileage tests. Let’s see how they rank.
4. Toyota Innova Hycross
Average tested mileage: 14.60kpl
Kicking things off is the Toyota Innova Hycross with a 184hp 2.0-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain – the strongest one here by far. However, the Innova Hycross is also a large and relatively heavy people-mover, so in our testing, it achieved 13.10kpl in the city and 16.10kpl on the highway, averaging out to 14.60kpl.

|---|---|
| Price (Rs, lakh) | 25.90-31.90 |
| Engine | 2.0-litre, 4 cyls, petrol-hybrid |
| Power (hp) | 184 (combined) |
| Torque (Nm) | 188 (engine) + 206 (motor) |
| Gearbox | e-CVT |
| Claimed mileage (kpl) | 22.16 |
| Tested mileage in city (kpl) | 13.10 |
| Tested mileage on highway (kpl) | 16.10 |
| Average tested mileage (kpl) | 14.60 |
That’s 7.56kpl off the claimed mileage figure of 22.16kpl, but impressive nonetheless given this Toyota MPV’s size and the fact that it’s the only model here that can seat up to eight occupants.
3. Honda City Hybrid
Average tested mileage: 21.15kpl
The Honda City e:HEV stands as the only hybrid sedan available in the mass market. It’s powered by a 126hp 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid setup mated to an e-CVT and delivered an impressive 19.80kpl in urban conditions and 22.50kpl on the highway in our real-world mileage tests.

|---|---|
| Price (Rs, lakh) | 19.48 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre, 4 cyls, petrol-hybrid |
| Power (hp) | 126 (combined) |

| Tested mileage in city (kpl) | 19.80 |
| Tested mileage on highway (kpl) | 22.50 |
| Average tested mileage (kpl) | 21.15 |
This works out to an average real-world fuel efficiency of 21.15kpl, which is 6.11kpl off Honda’s claimed 27.26kpl figure. Unlike the other cars on this list, the City Hybrid is available in just one variant as the range-topper of the City line-up and, therefore, it has the second-highest starting price here.
2. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder
Average tested mileage: 21.57kpl
The top two cars on this list are badge-engineered siblings, with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder slotting into second place. Hybrid variants of the Hyryder come equipped with a 116hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain that, in our testing, achieved 20.28kpl in the city and 22.85kpl on the highway.

|---|---|
| Price range (Rs, lakh) | 16.46-19.76 |
| Engine | 1.5-litre, 3 cyls, petrol-hybrid |

| Tested mileage in city (kpl) | 20.28 |
| Tested mileage on highway (kpl) | 22.85 |
| Average tested mileage (kpl) | 21.57 |
Notably, the Hyryder has the most frugal highway fuel efficiency reading here, and all told, the midsize SUV’s average real-world mileage computes to 21.57kpl. That’s 6.4kpl off from the Hyryder’s claimed 27.97kpl mileage, and the fact that it outpaces the lower-slung City Hybrid is quite impressive.
1. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara
Average tested mileage: 22.08kpl
Pole position in the real-world hybrid mileage rankings goes to the Maruti Grand Vitara, which, as mentioned above, is the Hyryder’s sibling. The Grand Vitara’s hybrid variants have the same 116hp, 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain, but our testing shows that the Maruti SUV pulls a major mileage lead in the city with a 23.77kpl reading.

| Tested mileage in city (kpl) | 23.77 |
| Tested mileage on highway (kpl) | 20.39 |
| Average tested mileage (kpl) | 22.08 |
On the highway, the Grand Vitara’s 20.39kpl mileage figure falls short of those of the Hyryder and City Hybrid. Overall, the Grand Vitara’s average fuel efficiency works out to 22.08kpl, which is 5.89kpl off the claimed mileage figure of 27.97kpl – the lowest delta here.
