Buying a used Toyota Hyryder: What to look out for

Toyota Hyryder blue

GOOD FOR: Smooth and efficient engines, comfy ride

LOOK OUT FOR: Infotainment issues, interior rattles

Launched in 2022, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota’s answer to the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, and others in the midsize SUV segment. A sister model to the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, the Hyryder stands out for its efficient hybrid powertrain, ride comfort and features list that make it a worthy used buy. Here’s all you need to know when buying one.

Toyota Hyryder powertrain and mileage

Mild-hybrid, strong hybrid, CNG powertrain options

The Hyryder is offered with two engine options. The 103hp, 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine that comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic; AWD was only available with the top-end mild-hybrid manual variant at launch. The second powertrain is a 92hp, 1.5-litre, three-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with an electric motor that makes 79hp and 141Nm. Combined, the hybrid powertrain makes 115hp and is paired with an e-CVT gearbox.

Additionally, a CNG version was launched in 2023 with the 1.5-litre Suzuki engine, producing a lower 88hp and 121.5Nm and paired with a 5-speed manual only. Furthermore, the AWD MT variant was discontinued in 2025, and it was replaced by an AWD paired with the 6-speed AT gearbox.

In our road test review, the Hyryder strong hybrid returned a staggering 20.28kpl in the city and 22.85kpl on the highway. The mild-hybrid, on the other hand, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, returned 10.83kpl and 15.67kpl in our city and highway tests, respectively. We haven’t tested the petrol-AT, which is claimed to do 20.58kpl; the AWD MT, which is said to do 19.20kpl; and the CNG, which has a claimed 26.6km/kg.

All powertrains are smooth and efficient, so you can’t really go wrong with whichever you opt for. However, choose based on your usage pattern. Those with high running will find good value in the strong hybrid and CNG, given the lower running costs compared to the mild-hybrid petrols. However, the mild hybrids will be more affordable to buy. Those interested in light off-roading can opt for the AWD. It’s worth keeping in mind that the strong hybrid has a smaller boot than the mild-hybrid petrol and AWD, owing to the battery being placed below the boot floor, while the CNG has even smaller cargo space due to the tanks placed in the boot.

Toyota Hyryder variants and features

17-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder was launched in four trim levels – E, S, G and V. The Hyryder, in its highest V trim, gets features like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, drive modes, wireless phone charger, a heads-up display, 17-inch alloys, LED headlamps, ambient lighting, connected car tech, an Arkamys-tuned surround sound system and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity. As for safety features, the range-topper gets 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera, TPMS, hill-hold and hill-descent control.

All trims are decently equipped in relation to their price, but the mid-spec G offers the best balance between cost and features. Do note, the strong hybrid is offered on the S, G and V trims, while the CNG is offered in the mid-spec S and G.

Warranty is 3 years/1,00,000km, which can be extended to 5 years/ 2,20,000km. The strong hybrid’s battery, meanwhile, gets an 8-year/1,60,000km warranty. It’s worth looking for an example that has the extended warranty, given that the SUV will still be covered under it, giving you peace of mind.

What to look out for in a used Toyota Hyryder?

Infotainment issues

Owners have faced issues with the 9-inch touchscreen on higher variants. Issues include the phone randomly disconnecting, the screen freezing or blanking and the system rebooting. Most of these pertain to software updates, so ensure that has been taken care of.

Interior rattles

There have been complaints of rattles coming from behind the centre console and gear lever area as the car ages. Before buying, drive through a rough patch of road and listen for any rattling sounds.

Cabin heating

Hyryder sunroof

Owners of panoramic sunroof-equipped variants have complained about excessive heat radiating from the glass, thanks to the thin sun blind. Toyota started offering a thicker sunroof film as a dealer-level fitment, which alleviated the issue. If you are looking at a car with a sunroof, ensure it has the film installed, as it helps lower the cabin temperature.

Past recalls

The Hyryder has also been subjected to recalls, so ensure those have been taken care of before you buy. In December 2022, around 1,000 units of the SUV were recalled for an issue pertaining to the seat belt shoulder height adjuster. Similarly, units produced between December 8, 2022, and January 12, 2023, were also recalled to fix a fault in the airbag control unit.

Second hand Toyota Hyryder price, resale value

Look to spend anywhere between Rs 9 lakh and 15 lakh, depending on the variant, age and mileage. However, don’t look to spend over that, as you’d find better value in buying a brand-new one.
