Royal Enfield Scram 440 review: the Goldilocks RE?

Image
With the Himalayan 411 now relegated to the history books and the new Himalayan 450 proving to be too big and expensive for those who want an accessible and affordable do-it-all bike from Royal Enfield, you’re left with the Scram 440. This bike is essentially a heavily revised version of the Scram 411 that was on sale previously and as you’ll read on, it is a surprisingly capable machine. Royal Enfield Scram 440 Design & quality - 7/10 Has a bright colour palette and decent build quality While this bike came out just last year, the Scram 440 traces its roots back to the original Himalayan 411 and while Royal Enfield has overhauled quite a lot, you can never escape the fact that this bike feels old in some areas. But that’s not a bad thing - in fact, I quite like its old-school, straightforward persona in the face of increasingly ‘new-age’ bikes flooding the market today. While not as ultimately neat and tidy as the new-gen REs, the finish levels on the 440 are quite acceptable...

New Honda sub-4m SUV could be on the cards for India

Image
Honda currently has only one model, the Amaze  sedan, in the sub-4-metre category. Earlier, it had three more – the Brio and Jazz hatchbacks and the WR-V SUV – which have been phased out. With the revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure favouring sub-4-metre vehicles through lower taxation, Honda may revisit its strategy for this segment, potentially with a compact SUV. However, sources indicated that Honda has yet to finalise plans for it, with cost optimisation posing a major hurdle.  Honda’s need for a new subcompact SUV This SUV segment is currently one of the major growth drivers of India’s passenger vehicle market. Sub-4-metre models such as the Tata Nexon , Maruti Suzuki Brezza , Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO are among the top-selling vehicles. An entry into this segment can give Honda the much-needed volume play and momentum to regain its lost market share.  Honda has been losing market share in India due to its limited portfolio...

Eurogrip tyre factory visit: At the source

Image
There are few components on an automobile that get precious little thought and attention while simultaneously playing such a big role as tyres. Tyres are some of the most valuable yet underappreciated aspects of riding a bike. Indian-made two-wheeler tyres have taken huge leaps forward in the past few years when it comes to performance, and TVS Shrichakra has been one of the manufacturers leading that charge with its Eurogrip brand. While we’ve already had a few opportunities to sample their impressive new offerings , the company recently extended a unique opportunity to visit their tyre manufacturing facility in Madurai. The tour began with a visit to the raw materials stocking warehouse, which provided a glimpse at the scale of the operation. This was a big warehouse packed with the very base-level materials that go into making a tyre – or rather, the particular rubber compounds that make the tyre. The company showed off an early-stage prototype of a new superbike tyre it is cur...
